Standard Wire Gauge(SWG):
- British Standard Wire Gauge (SWG) is a unit for denoting wire size given by BS 3737:1964 (now withdrawn). It is also known as the Imperial Wire Gauge or British Standard Gauge.
- Use of SWG sizes has fallen greatly in popularity, but is still used as a measure of thickness in guitar strings and some electrical wire.
- Cross sectional area in square millimeters is now the more usual size measurement for wires used in electrical installation cables.
American Wire Gauge (AWG):
- It is a U.S. standard for wire conductor size. The “gauge” is related to the diameter of the wire.
- The AWG standard includes copper, aluminum and other wire materials.
- Typical household copper wiring is AWG number 12 or 14. Telephone wire is usually 22, 24, or 26.
- The higher the gauge number, the smaller the diameter and the thinner the wire.
